Clearing Mines From Strait of Hormuz Would Be Complex Operation, Expert Warns

Removing sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz presents a technically challenging and time-consuming operation, a U.S. defense expert warned Tuesday. This warning follows reports that Iran may be obligated to clear mines from the strategic waterway under a proposed U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding.

According to CNN, White House talking points indicate that Iran would be responsible for de-mining the strait, a critical global shipping route through which a substantial portion of the world's energy supplies passes. A senior U.S. official suggested to CNN that maritime traffic could resume normal operations within 30 days once Iran commits to mine removal.

However, Scott Savitz, a mine warfare expert at the RAND Corporation, described the process as "painstaking." He questioned Iran's ability to successfully complete the task without external assistance, emphasizing the need for extreme precision and specialized capabilities. Savitz highlighted that locating and safely neutralizing mines in such a busy international waterway demands advanced equipment, trained personnel, and meticulous planning to prevent further risks to commercial and naval operations.
