Climber Stranded on 15-Centimeter Ledge at 3,000 Meters in Sierra Nevada Rescued After Dramatic Nine-Hour Operation

For nine hours, an experienced climber remained balanced on a ledge only about 15 centimeters wide on Laurel Mountain in California’s Sierra Nevada. He had become separated from his partner after moving at a different pace and unknowingly left the correct route.

The climber had been ascending the Mendenhall Couloir, a route known for steep terrain, unstable rocks and a high degree of difficulty. After traveling about 30 meters along the wrong corridor, he realized he could neither continue nor descend safely. A steep slope lay beneath him, and a fall could have had tragic consequences. He sent an SOS using a Garmin InReach device.

The Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team received the emergency call on the afternoon of August 22. Weather made the rescue especially difficult. Strong winds and high temperatures prevented helicopters from operating, so rescuers were transported to more than 3,300 meters and continued on foot.

After reaching the mountain summit, the team descended through difficult terrain and established visual and verbal contact with the climber. They noticed that he was constantly shifting his weight from one foot to the other, suggesting that fatigue and cramps were becoming increasingly dangerous.

The rescue itself began after darkness fell. Rescuers installed a rope system above the climber and lowered one team member to his position. Once secured, the two descended together to a safer platform. The team then installed a second safety system and brought everyone back to the mountain ridge. The mission ended at 4:43 a.m., when the climber and rescuers reached vehicles waiting at the trailhead. The rescue team described it as one of the area’s most serious and rare operations.
