Cloudy glasses after dishwasher use? Experts reveal why they lose their shine and how to fix it

Cloudy glasses emerging from the dishwasher can be a frustrating sight, often appearing worse than before they were washed. While sometimes attributed to the glass quality itself, the milky haze is frequently caused by mineral deposits from hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium.

These minerals settle on the glass, obscuring its clarity and shine. Hard water also hinders proper detergent rinsing, leaving residue that contributes to the cloudy appearance. If cleaning methods fail to restore transparency, the cloudiness might indicate permanent damage to the glass, potentially caused by excessively high wash temperatures or too much detergent.

Experts recommend several effective cleaning solutions. Soaking glasses in a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and warm water for about 30 minutes can dissolve mineral buildup. After soaking, rinse the glasses thoroughly with warm water and immediately dry them with a clean cloth to prevent new spots.

Alternatively, a soft cloth dampened with hydrogen peroxide can be used to gently wipe the glass surfaces. A paste made from baking soda and water can also be applied and lightly polished onto the glass before rinsing and drying. To prevent recurring cloudiness, it's advised to adjust detergent usage, consistently employ rinse aid, and potentially lower the dishwasher's wash temperature.
