CNMI: Tinian mayor welcomes US military training approval

The US Navy and Marine Corps have finalized plans for expanded distributed operations training on Tinian, an island in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan has welcomed the US Department of the Navy's approval of this joint military training but emphasized the need for better public information regarding the decision's specifics.

The navy issued a Record of Decision on July 23, formally approving Alternative 1 of the CNMI Joint Military Training project. This decision permits increased land-based military training and the construction of associated infrastructure on Tinian, following over a decade of environmental reviews and public consultations. The approved alternative will boost military training on Tinian by approximately 15 percent compared to previous activities.

Key components of the approved plan include the establishment of two live-fire ranges, new landing zones, ammunition holding areas, radar towers, and biosecurity facilities. The US Navy stated that the project aims to improve military readiness in the Indo-Pacific region while implementing measures to minimize environmental and community impacts. Mayor Aldan noted that the decision provides clarity on future developments and could create economic opportunities for Tinian.
