Coal above all: Museum curator says Teplice lost its identity due to demolition and transformation

Teplice, a city in the Czech Republic, has seen its historical identity eroded by extensive demolition and urban transformation, according to Jindřich Zajíc, the curator of a new exhibition at the Teplice Museum. The exhibition showcases the city's architectural evolution during the second half of the 20th century, a period marked by significant social changes and the pervasive influence of coal mining.

Zajíc explains that the intense coal extraction activities created a pressing demand for increased housing capacity. This demand directly fueled widespread demolition projects, replacing older structures to accommodate the growing population and industrial needs. The curator laments that the scale of this redevelopment has irrevocably altered the city's original character.

"So much was destroyed that Teplice lost its identity through demolition and urban renewal in the last century," Zajíc stated. His exhibition features a collection of three-dimensional models, photographs, and historical artifacts that meticulously document this transformative era. The display aims to highlight the dramatic physical and social shifts the city experienced, offering a stark reminder of what has been lost in the name of progress and development.
