Coast Guard Corporal's Vietnamese Skills Lead to Arrest of Fugitive Migrant Worker

A Coast Guard corporal's self-taught Vietnamese skills proved instrumental in uncovering an undocumented migrant worker who was also a wanted fugitive. Personnel at the Xiaguzi security checkpoint were patrolling the Xiaguzi fishing harbor when they noticed a foreign man fishing whose demeanor seemed unusual. Upon closer inspection, the man's residence permit was found to have a photo that did not match his appearance and had expired. While verifying his identity at the security checkpoint, a corporal named Zhong, who had been diligently studying Vietnamese, engaged the man in conversation. The migrant worker confessed to possessing a forged permit, confirming he was an undocumented worker. Further checks with the Taoyuan City Special Investigation Team revealed he was also a wanted fugitive. The Coast Guard has since handed him over to immigration authorities to await repatriation. The Coast Guard emphasized its ongoing efforts to strengthen patrols and prevent illegal activities along the coast and in harbors, urging the public to report any suspicious activities by calling the 118 service hotline.
