Coinbase posts third straight quarterly loss as trading slows

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global has announced its third consecutive quarterly loss, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the digital asset market. The company reported a net loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 per share, for the second quarter ending June 30. This marks a stark contrast to the profit of $1.43 billion, or $5.14 per share, recorded in the same period last year.

The primary driver behind the losses is a significant decline in transaction revenue. Coinbase's transaction revenue dropped by 21% to $599 million during the quarter, down from $764 million a year prior. This reduction in trading volume reflects a broader market trend where investors have become more risk-averse.

Several factors contributed to the subdued trading activity in the April-to-June quarter. Uncertainty surrounding U.S. interest rates, coupled with escalating geopolitical tensions, prompted investors to shy away from riskier assets like cryptocurrencies. Persistent outflows from crypto investment products further exacerbated the market's weakness, extending a retreat from the record highs seen in October.

Following the announcement, Coinbase's shares experienced a decline, falling 4.9% in after-hours trading. The company's financial performance highlights the volatility and sensitivity of the cryptocurrency market to macroeconomic factors and global events.
