Colombia earthquake leaves 111 dead, 87 injured; Dominican Republic offers aid

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, leaving at least 111 people dead and 87 injured, according to initial reports. The tremor, with its epicenter in the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, also caused widespread damage, with 1,575 homes damaged and 37 completely destroyed. Additionally, 61 buildings collapsed, and 52 educational centers and 18 health facilities sustained damage.

Transportation networks were severely impacted, with 18 roads affected and seven airports in cities like Pereira, Manizales, and Cali suffering infrastructure damage, leading to their closure for commercial flights. The earthquake's depth of 82 kilometers and its location in a region prone to seismic activity contributed to the significant shaking felt across the country.
