Colombian earthquake: Five Peruvians repatriated after losing accommodation

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the repatriation of five Peruvian women who were affected by a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. The women returned to Peru on Thursday via a humanitarian flight organized by consular authorities and the Peruvian Air Force (FAP).

Among the repatriated individuals were elderly women and a minor. The young girl had traveled to Colombia for a swimming championship, accompanied by her mother and aunts. Their lodging was destroyed by the seismic event, leaving them vulnerable. Another repatriated woman is a psychology student who was attending a seminar when the earthquake hit, also placing her in a precarious situation.

The return journey began late Wednesday night from Cali, utilizing a flight that was transporting humanitarian aid to the affected region. The operation was facilitated by the Peruvian Chargé d'Affaires in Colombia and consular officials. Upon arrival in Peru, they were welcomed by the Vice Minister of Defense Policies from the Ministry of Defense.

The successful repatriation effort was a collaborative success, involving the Peruvian Embassy in Colombia, the Consulate General of Peru in Bogotá, the Honorary Consulate in Cali, and the FAP. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of Peruvians abroad, and the women have since been reunited with their families.
