Colombian Governor and Congressman Fail to Settle Defamation Case

A legal dispute between Valle del Cauca Governor Dilian Francisca Toro and Representative Alfredo Mondragón has reached a stalemate, as the two failed to reach a conciliation agreement at the Supreme Court of Justice. Governor Toro had filed a complaint against Mondragón for alleged slander and libel, stemming from accusations made on social media regarding the mismanagement of funds for the strategic Cercanías Railway project. Toro maintains that Mondragón's claims, made without evidence, have damaged her honor and reputation. She asserted her commitment to defending her good name and utilizing all necessary legal avenues. "I will always defend my good name and will go to all necessary instances to have it respected," Toro stated after the hearing. "Today, in the conciliation hearing with Representative Alfredo Mondragón, it was not possible to reach an agreement. Faced with lies, slander, and calumny, I will not yield. It is not possible for political oversight to be a tool to violate the rights of those of us who exercise public function," she added. Conversely, Mondragón, a representative from the Pacto Histórico party, remains resolute in his stance. He affirmed his intention to continue with his denunciations and political oversight activities. "Dilian wants to silence me through judicial means, but I will not kneel. Today we confronted her and we will continue to defeat her," Mondragón declared in a social media post, underscoring the ongoing political tension and the differing approaches to public accountability.
