Commonwealth Games: Tinubu lauds Team Nigeria’s 24-medal feat, pledges more investment in sports

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for their impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the athletes secured a total of 24 medals. The Nigerian contingent concluded the games with 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals, a feat President Tinubu described as a testament to the resilience, discipline, and determination of the nation's athletes.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted that the athletes carried Nigeria's flag with dignity and pride throughout the competition. He emphasized that the medals earned are a direct result of their hard work and perseverance. The President believes the experience gained will serve as a foundation for future international successes and inspire young Nigerians to embrace commitment and national service.

He extended profound appreciation on behalf of the government and the people of Nigeria to the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and everyone whose dedication made the country's participation possible.

The President also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their commitment to advancing sports development and supporting athletes. He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to investing in sports, strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities, and creating enhanced opportunities for Nigerian athletes to excel globally.

Team Nigeria's 24-medal haul, including 10 gold, marks another commendable outing, though it falls short of the country's best performances in recent editions. For comparison, Nigeria won 35 medals (12 gold, 9 silver, 14 bronze) at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and 24 medals (9 gold, 9 silver, 6 bronze) at the 2018 Gold Coast Games. Their strongest recent performance was at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where they secured 36 medals, including 11 gold.
