Community Fair Dispute Escalates: Elderly Man Subdued by Police in Hidalgo

A municipal council session in Mineral de la Reforma, Hidalgo, erupted into conflict when an elderly man, Raúl N., and his family confronted officials. They were demanding the restitution of the organization of the 11 de Julio neighborhood fair, a responsibility that had been transferred to another resident, Teresa N.

The situation escalated when Teresa N. requested police intervention, citing a restraining order. Videos shared online depict Raúl N. being initially escorted peacefully from the building. However, the situation turned violent outside, where he was allegedly beaten by municipal police officers.

The incident, which occurred in front of the mayor and other public servants, has drawn criticism for the lack of intervention to prevent the escalation. The municipal presidency has stated its commitment to ensuring the safety of women and called for dialogue, while also pointing fingers at opposition councilors for allegedly exacerbating the situation.
