Company Accountant Sentenced to 1 Year, 8 Months for Embezzling 500 Million Won

A company accountant has been sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for a significant embezzlement scheme spanning six years. The woman, in her 30s, was found guilty of stealing approximately 556 million won (about $400,000 USD) from her employer and meticulously manipulating financial records to cover her tracks.

The court heard that the accountant, identified as 'A', repeatedly transferred company funds to her personal accounts between February 2017 and June 2023. These funds were used for personal expenses. To conceal these illicit transactions, she falsified bank account records and even altered the company's accounting program over several years.

The Busan District Court's Western Branch, presided over by Judge Na Won-sik, handed down the sentence for charges including violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Economic Crimes (embezzlement) and forgery/use of electronic records. The court emphasized the serious nature of the offenses, noting the substantial amount embezzled and the deliberate efforts to obstruct justice through record manipulation.

However, the court also took into account mitigating factors during sentencing. 'A' admitted to the charges and showed remorse for her actions. Furthermore, she had already repaid approximately 174.56 million won (about $125,000 USD) towards the stolen amount. Combined with her lack of prior criminal convictions, these factors influenced the judge's decision to impose a prison sentence without immediate detention.
