Concerns over Aquatopia pool cameras in Aalst unfounded: 'We don't film where people change'

Concerns raised by visitors at the Aquatopia swimming pool in Aalst regarding security cameras near the changing rooms have been addressed by the sports department. A photograph circulating on Facebook depicted a camera mounted above a changing cubicle, leading to discussions and worries among some patrons about potential filming while they undress.

Sven Van Keymeulen, head of the Sports Department for the city of Aalst, reassured the public that filming inside the changing rooms is strictly prohibited. He explained that the cameras are strategically positioned to cover the walkways and locker areas, primarily serving as a deterrent against theft. Van Keymeulen acknowledged that the design of some cameras might create the impression they cover wider areas, but emphasized that their actual focus is limited to the designated zones.

The camera system has been in place since Aquatopia opened and operates in compliance with privacy regulations, overseen by a Data Protection Officer. Visitors are alerted when entering areas with surveillance, and the footage is accessible only to the police, who have used it in the past to identify individuals involved in thefts. Van Keymeulen expressed understanding for the visitors' unease but reiterated that the hardware and software are configured to prevent any recording within the changing cubicles themselves.

He noted that misunderstandings can arise when official responses are not immediate, particularly in local Facebook groups. However, he concluded with a firm statement: "No, the cameras at Aquatopia do not film in the changing rooms."
