Conservatives and far-right Vox agree to govern Spain's most populous region

The conservative People's Party (PP) has formed a coalition government in Andalusia, Spain's most populous region, with the far-right Vox party. PP leader Juanma Moreno was re-elected as regional president after securing the necessary votes from Vox. This alliance makes Andalusia the fourth Spanish region to be governed by a PP-Vox coalition.

Moreno agreed to Vox's anti-immigration platform, which advocates for prioritizing Spanish citizens over foreigners for social benefits, jobs, and housing. While the PP has accepted this phrasing in previous regional coalitions, they interpret "national priority" not as a matter of citizenship but as a connection to the territory. This interpretation aims to align with constitutional and EU law, suggesting that longer residency and economic contribution would grant greater claims, which typically favors Spanish citizens.

The PP had lost its absolute majority in the May 17 election, securing 53 seats compared to Vox's 15. With an absolute majority requiring 55 seats, Moreno was dependent on Vox's support. The coalition's formation signifies a significant shift in regional politics, consolidating the influence of the far-right Vox party across Spain.
