Construction to begin on $2.9B natural gas pipeline in central Alberta

Construction is poised to commence immediately on Alberta's new $2.9 billion Yellowhead natural gas pipeline, following approval from the provincial power regulator. The project, proposed by Canadian Utilities Ltd., will involve building and operating a 235-kilometer natural gas transmission pipeline. This vital infrastructure will connect the Peers area in west-central Alberta to the Fort Saskatchewan region, a key hub for gas processing and petrochemical facilities northeast of Edmonton.

Once operational, the Yellowhead Pipeline is anticipated to deliver over 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily. This volume is equivalent to the total natural gas output of Alberta's entire electricity system on a peak day, highlighting its significant capacity. Jason Sharpe, chief operating officer at ATCO Ltd., Canadian Utilities’ parent company, emphasized the project's role in meeting the province's increasing demand for secure, reliable, and affordable energy.

He added that ATCO is prepared to move forward with construction, leveraging its extensive experience in natural gas infrastructure and strong relationships with contractors, communities, and Treaty 6 Nations.

Canadian Utilities confirmed that all major contracts for pipeline and compressor work, along with supply and materials, have already been awarded. The project is projected to generate approximately 2,000 direct construction jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy. ATCO has identified the Yellowhead pipeline as its largest-ever energy infrastructure undertaking.
