Container truck carrying 20 tons of durian catches fire on Ho Chi Minh Highway

A container truck carrying a significant load of durian experienced a fire while traveling on the Ho Chi Minh Highway in Vietnam's Quang Tri province. The incident occurred early on July 22, 2026.

The truck, driven by 49-year-old Tran Quang Thong from Hai Phong city, suffered a tire blowout. The resulting flames quickly spread to the container, igniting the approximately 20 tons of durian packed inside.

Upon receiving news of the fire, local police from Ben Quan Commune arrived at the scene. They coordinated with other functional forces and residents to manage traffic, extinguish the blaze, and, crucially, unload the valuable cargo. The collective effort focused on salvaging as much of the durian as possible.

Thanks to the swift response and assistance from the authorities and the community, the fire was brought under control by 9 a.m. the same day. An estimated 90% of the durian shipment was successfully removed from the burning truck and secured, significantly reducing the potential financial losses from the incident.
