Content Creators and Lawmakers Launch Major Reforestation Operation in Bizerte

A national reforestation campaign, aiming to plant more than 200,000 trees in the Nadhour mountain region of Bizerte, has been launched by a coalition of Tunisian content creators and members of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People. The initiative, scheduled for October 25, 2026, seeks to restore the forest cover significantly damaged by a recent fire that ravaged large areas.

The campaign organizers intend to mobilize various societal components, including associations, civil society organizations, local and regional authorities, public and private institutions, and citizens. Support can range from participating in planting operations to providing logistical assistance or communication efforts to encourage broad participation. The project's promoters emphasize collective responsibility in sustainably restoring the Nadhour mountain's vegetation and preserving national forest heritage, aligning with sustainable development goals.

This effort comes at a critical time for Tunisia, which has experienced a surge in forest fires. Numerous regions have been affected by unusually large fires, exacerbated by exceptional climatic conditions like record temperatures and prolonged heatwaves. These fires have caused substantial damage to forest ecosystems, agricultural lands, and local populations.

Data from the General Directorate of Forests indicates a stark increase in forest destruction. Between May 1 and July 23, 2026, nearly 4,400 hectares of forest were destroyed, a significant rise from the 2,705 hectares lost during the same period in 2025. The period between July 11 and July 22, 2026, alone saw 90 registered fires, with major outbreaks in several governorates, including Kef, Bizerte, Béja, Zaghouan, and Jendouba.
