Contest for Attorney General receives 51 challenges against candidates

Ecuador's process for selecting a new Attorney General has reached a critical stage, concluding its citizen challenge period with 51 objections filed against various candidates. The Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs) reported that this figure might still change as national and consular information is consolidated.

During the challenge period, citizens and social organizations could raise objections based on five grounds: failing to meet legal requirements, lacking probity or suitability, being subject to prohibitions or disqualifications, omitting relevant information in their application, or falsifying documents. These challenges are a key part of ensuring the integrity of the selection process for the head of the State's General Prosecutor's Office.

Following the conclusion of the qualification of merits, 27 candidates were deemed eligible to proceed. The Cpccs approved the opening of the challenge phase on July 24. Now, the General Secretariat of the Cpccs will forward the objections to the Citizen Selection Commission. This commission has five days to review each case and decide on its admissibility.

Admissible objections will proceed to a public hearing. If an objection is deemed inadmissible, the decision can be appealed to the Plenary of the Cpccs. This structured process aims to thoroughly vet candidates before the final selection of the Attorney General, who is responsible for representing the State's General Prosecutor's Office.
