Control Yuan Reprimands Livestock Farm Waste Handling; Taiwan Sugar to Speed Up New Pig Farm Construction

Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) is expediting the modernization of its pig farming operations following a critical review by the Control Yuan concerning waste disposal practices. The state-owned enterprise announced on June 8 that it has initiated a comprehensive review and will accelerate the upgrade of its pig farms.

New piggery facilities are being designed to integrate waste recycling and reuse equipment. This initiative aims to significantly lower the environmental burden associated with livestock farming and enhance the efficiency of resource utilization. TSC stressed its dedication to improving governance, implementing stringent management protocols, and upholding its social and environmental responsibilities.

Following the Control Yuan's reprimand, TSC has undertaken a thorough examination of its internal control and management systems. The review focused on areas including wastewater and sludge management, disposal of deceased pigs, operation of environmental facilities, and oversight of procurement processes. Three specific improvement measures have been proposed.

These measures include strengthening sludge transportation through centralized contracting, enhancing contract performance monitoring, and establishing a dedicated audit mechanism. Additionally, TSC will implement stricter source control for deceased pigs by installing sealed temporary storage facilities at its farms and establishing a reporting and verification system for dead animal disposal. The company also plans to actively cooperate with local governments on stray dog management to maintain farm hygiene and biosecurity. The modernization plan, incorporating waste recycling, is a key component of TSC's commitment to environmental sustainability.
