Convicted fraudster extradited to Israel from Panama following multi-year pursuit

An Israeli man convicted of a major tax fraud case, Yaniv Mualem, has been extradited from Panama to Israel, concluding a pursuit that lasted nearly two-and-a-half years. The Tax Authority, State Attorney's Office, and Israel Police, with Interpol's assistance, tracked Mualem after he fled the country during his legal proceedings.

Mualem was convicted in one of Israel's most significant fraud cases, involving hundreds of millions of shekels. Prior to his escape, the Nazareth District Court found him guilty of money laundering and using shell companies to create fictitious tax invoices, defrauding the State Treasury of NIS 65 million. He had confessed to the crimes, and a plea deal was arranged for heavy fines and a 10-year prison sentence.

After fleeing, the court ordered the forfeiture of approximately NIS one million of Mualem's assets. He was located in Panama in September 2024, leading to his arrest and the commencement of extradition efforts. Upon arrival at Ben-Gurion Airport, Interpol transferred Mualem to Israeli authorities, who have requested his detention be extended to complete legal proceedings.

A spokesperson for the Tax Authority stated, "Tax offenders cannot escape the threat of justice. Even those who choose to flee to the ends of the earth will be found, extradited, and brought to justice." The authorities also noted that individuals who aided Mualem's escape would face charges.
