Cook Islands Election: Preliminary Results Indicate Incumbent Leader's Strong Showing, Upset in Opposition

Preliminary results are emerging from the Cook Islands general election, indicating a strong showing for incumbent Prime Minister Mark Brown. As of 10 p.m. local time, Brown, leader of the Cook Islands Party, had secured a significant lead in the Takuvaine-Tutakimoa seat with 269 votes.

Leaders of other major parties also appear to be performing well in the initial counts. Teariki Heather, head of the United Party, won the Murienua seat with 320 votes, more than double that of his closest rival. However, the election has seen an upset, with Democratic Party leader Tina Browne, the former opposition leader, reportedly losing her Rakahanga seat by just three votes to Levi Hitarahera Teinaki of the Cook Islands Party.

Voting stations opened Wednesday morning and closed at 6 p.m. local time, with 11,000 registered voters across 24 constituencies. Thirteen seats are required to form a majority government. A total of 63 candidates, including 20% independents, are contesting the election. Issues such as the cost of living, water tariffs, seabed minerals, and foreign relations are front-of-mind for voters. Bad weather has delayed voting in Nassau, with polling postponed to Thursday afternoon.
