Cooler temperatures with wet and windy weather forecast for UK this week

The UK's brief burst of late-summer warmth is giving way to wet and windy weather, with low-pressure systems set to dominate the start of the week.

After temperatures approached 29C in south-east England on Sunday, cooler air will spread across much of England and Wales. A weather front moving down from the north-west on Monday will bring cloud and showers before sunny spells develop. Temperatures could still reach 25C in south-east England.

Heavier rain will move from Northern Ireland into Scotland and Cumbria on Monday afternoon. Strong, gusty southwesterly winds will keep temperatures around 17C in Scotland and Northern Ireland. On Tuesday, gusts of 50 to 60 mph are possible in northern and western Scotland, where frequent showers are also expected.

The unsettled conditions will ease from Wednesday as low pressure moves into the North Sea and higher pressure brings lighter winds and sunshine to much of the UK. Showers could return to western areas on Thursday before fading as they move east on Friday. The Environment Agency said last week was England's wettest since early February, despite a mostly dry weekend for many areas.
