Cornwall Regional Hospital operates with one neurosurgeon amid specialist shortage

Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in St. James, Jamaica, is facing a critical shortage of neurosurgeons, operating with only one of its three approved consultant positions filled. This situation highlights Jamaica's ongoing struggle to retain and attract highly specialized medical professionals.

The Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA) acknowledged concerns regarding neurosurgical services at the Montego Bay-based hospital. While assuring that arrangements are in place for patients needing specialized care, the authority confirmed the scarcity of qualified neurosurgeons. Patients requiring interventions not available at CRH are referred to other institutions like the University Hospital of the West Indies and Kingston Public Hospital, based on their clinical needs.

The WRHA stated that the shortage is not isolated to CRH but is a broader national challenge. To address this, the government has approved the establishment of an International Recruitment Unit within the Ministry of Health and Wellness to attract overseas professionals. Concurrently, discussions are ongoing with The University of the West Indies to expand local specialist training programs. The authority emphasized a commitment to ensuring all Jamaicans have access to timely and appropriate healthcare, regardless of their location within the public health system.

An additional neurosurgeon is expected to join the Cornwall Regional team shortly, which should bolster the hospital's capacity and alleviate pressure caused by the current staffing gap. The WRHA stressed that patients are not denied care due to the immediate unavailability of a neurosurgeon at CRH, as clinical teams assess and activate appropriate referral pathways.
