Costa Rica to Implement Digital Pesticide Prescriptions July 27, 2026

Costa Rica is set to introduce a mandatory digital prescription system for restricted pesticides, a move aimed at enhancing transparency and preventing the distortion of public debate through digital means or anonymity. The system, mandated by Decree N.° 45488-MAG, will officially come into effect on July 27, 2026.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) is actively preparing for this transition. The ministry is coordinating training and practical sessions with the College of Agronomists to ensure that professionals are well-equipped to use the new digital platform. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize agricultural practices and improve regulatory oversight.

The decree establishing the digital system was published in the official gazette, La Gaceta, on February 16, 2026. The implementation date signifies a commitment to adopting technological solutions for more efficient and secure management of agricultural inputs. The goal is to create a more accountable system for pesticide use.
