Counter-Terrorism Drill Simulates Smoke Bombs, Hostage Situation at Taipei's Nangang Station

Nangang Station in Taipei became the stage for a comprehensive counter-terrorism and anti-riot drill yesterday, simulating a severe security threat within the bustling transportation hub. The exercise, led by the Nangang Precinct, brought together various government bodies, including the fire department, health bureau, railway police, and MRT police, alongside private sector partners like Taiwan Railways Administration, Taipei Metro, and the security teams of the station's co-located shopping centers.

The drill commenced with a simulated attack where a man, described as having an unusual demeanor, deployed smoke bombs in the station's main hall, causing panic among commuters. This was followed by another assailant wielding a pre-concealed weapon, randomly attacking passersby and taking a civilian hostage. Station security immediately triggered an alarm, initiating the emergency response.

Responding to the alert, police quickly sealed off the station's entrances and exits. Special forces and professional negotiators arrived to engage with the perpetrator. During the negotiation, police successfully distracted the attacker, allowing for a swift assault to subdue the assailant, disarm him, and safely rescue the hostage. Concurrently, fire and health units provided immediate medical assistance, including emergency bandaging and evacuation of the injured.

Nangang Precinct officials stated that such realistic drills, emphasizing close collaboration between public and private sectors, are crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of responses to major security incidents and safeguarding public life and property. They reiterated the government's zero-tolerance stance on threats to public safety and pledged to continue strengthening inter-agency security networks to create a safer and more resilient environment for citizens.
