Couple sentenced after dismantling motel computers to steal graphics cards

A couple who booked motel rooms and dismantled the computers inside them to remove graphics cards have received prison sentences in South Korea.

The Daejeon District Court sentenced the husband, who is in his 30s, to two years in prison. His wife, in her 40s, received a one-year prison sentence suspended for two years. They faced charges including aggravated theft, embezzlement and fraud.

The couple allegedly committed five thefts after reserving a motel in Daejeon’s Jung-gu district in February. The stolen computer parts were valued at about 8 million won. The husband was also charged with stealing cigarettes from a convenience store and taking 100,000 won by claiming he would sell an online game account.

Judge Baek Kyung-hyun said the couple had repeatedly entered motels and stolen computer parts. The court also considered that they had compensated victims and reached settlements, with the victims saying they did not want punishment. The judge nevertheless took the husband’s other offenses into account when setting the sentences.
