Court orders forfeiture of jet linked to NNPCL power project fraud

In a significant victory for anti-corruption efforts, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured a final forfeiture order for a private jet implicated in fraud and money laundering. The aircraft, a Hawker 125, was linked to irregularities surrounding the Maiduguri Emergency Power Project, a scheme that has drawn the commission's scrutiny.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, ruled that the jet, registered as 5N-AMK, must be forfeited to the Federal Government. This decision stems from the failure of Valiente Jet Limited, a company associated with Abdulsalam Kachallah, to provide credible evidence of the lawful origin of the funds used to purchase the aircraft. The court noted the suspicious manner of the acquisition, which involved a Bureau De Change operator who disavowed knowledge of the transaction, further underscoring the illicit nature of the deal.

This forfeiture represents a crucial step in the EFCC's ongoing investigation into alleged corruption within the power project. The commission's probe revealed that contracts valued at over $114.1 million and ₦23.1 billion were awarded under the project. Allegations suggest that Kachallah, who held a position on the project's steering committee, exploited his influence for personal gain through unlawful agreements with a Chinese engineering firm, ultimately receiving financial inducements. The court's decisive action sends a strong message about accountability and the consequences of financial impropriety in public projects.
