Coventry sign striker Awoniyi from Forest

Coventry City has bolstered its attacking options by signing Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from fellow Premier League club Nottingham Forest. The transfer, reported to be around nine million pounds ($12 million), was announced on Monday.

Awoniyi, 29, brings a wealth of Premier League experience to Coventry. During his two seasons with Nottingham Forest, he made 90 appearances and found the net 21 times. Prior to his spell at Forest, Awoniyi spent six years affiliated with Liverpool, during which he had several loan spells, including a notable stint at German club Union Berlin.

The striker's career has been marked by resilience. He underwent abdominal surgery in May 2025 after an injury sustained from colliding with a goalpost, which required him to be placed in an induced coma. He made a return in July but faced another setback with a knee injury in November that sidelined him for an additional month last season.

Despite these challenges, Awoniyi expressed his enthusiasm for the move. "I'm really looking forward to working with my new teammates, I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship," Awoniyi stated. Coventry City is set to play Arsenal on Friday in their first Premier League match in 25 years.
