COVID-19 and Flu Outbreak Affects 276 Conscripts at Taiwan's Chenggongling Training Center

Taichung, Taiwan – An outbreak of respiratory illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19, has impacted a training cohort of 276 conscripts undergoing alternative military service at Chenggongling.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 148 conscripts have tested positive for COVID-19. Most cases were asymptomatic or presented with mild symptoms, as confirmed by physicians after initial screenings upon the conscripts' entry into the camp on July 23.

In addition to COVID-19, 39 conscripts were diagnosed with influenza A and 7 with influenza B. The training center has implemented measures such as "cabin and flow segregation" isolation, medical treatment, screening, health care, and arrangements for conscripts to recuperate at home. These actions were taken in accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and relevant medical units.

The situation has reportedly improved significantly, with daily new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and influenza falling below one in the three days leading up to the conscripts' graduation. The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that all actions taken comply with official health guidelines.
