CPBL Draft: 'Giant Fireballer' Pitcher Draws Attention But Faces Control Woes

As the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) draft approaches, National Taiwan Sport University pitcher Huang Jie-han is emerging as a notable prospect, albeit with significant question marks. Standing at 193 cm, Huang is nicknamed the "Giant Fireballer" for his fastball that consistently exceeds 150 kilometers per hour.

However, Huang's impressive velocity is overshadowed by his persistent control issues. This inconsistency has made him a polarizing figure in the draft, with his potential to be selected in the early rounds uncertain. His statistics from his four years in the university league highlight this problem: over 109.2 innings pitched, he issued 78 walks and hit batters.

In his senior year, Huang recorded 30 walks and hit batters in just 41 innings in the top-tier university league. His struggles with command continued in other collegiate competitions, including the Chunghwa Spring League and the Mei Hua Cup, where he issued a combined 14 walks in 16.2 innings in one tournament and 3 walks in 5 innings in another. His performance in the U.S. Draft League also reflected these issues, with 11 walks in 21.2 innings and a high 7.48 ERA.

National Taiwan Sport University head coach Chen Xuan-qi has acknowledged Huang's talent but stressed the need for improvement. "Huang Jie-han must pitch more consistently and throw strikes to show his value," Chen stated. "Otherwise, even throwing 150 kph won't help if the ball goes everywhere."
