CPPE Commends FG’s Unveiling of Social Intervention Programmes, Describes It as Important Shift in Economic Reforms

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has lauded the federal government's recent launch of Social Intervention Programmes (SIPs), characterizing them as a crucial pivot in the nation's reform agenda. The CPPE views this initiative as a strategic move from solely focusing on macroeconomic stability to actively ensuring that the advantages of reforms translate into tangible benefits for the broader population.

Together, they signal an important shift in the reform agenda: from restoring macroeconomic stability to ensuring that the benefits of reform translate into improved welfare, greater inclusion and shared prosperity.

In a policy brief titled "Strengthening The Legitimacy of Economic Reforms," the CPPE described the SIPs as a timely and commendable policy undertaking. These programs, which receive support from the World Bank, encompass five key interventions: the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus Additional Financing (NG-CARES AF), the Solutions for Internally Displaced and Host Communities Programme (SOLID), and three Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) programs (HOPE-GOV, HOPE-PHC, and HOPE-EDU).

CPPE stated that these programs signal an important shift, moving beyond restoring macroeconomic fundamentals like exchange-rate stability and fiscal transparency. While acknowledging the administration's success in strengthening these indicators, the CPPE emphasized that macroeconomic stability alone is insufficient. The true measure of any reform program lies in its ability to enhance living standards through lower inflation, increased productivity, stronger employment, and rising household incomes.

Beyond providing temporary relief to vulnerable households, it strengthens the social legitimacy of the reform process by demonstrating that economic reforms are ultimately intended to improve citizens’ welfare, not merely to deliver favourable macroeconomic indicators.

The CPPE highlighted that the SIPs are strategically important because they provide not only temporary relief to vulnerable households but also bolster the social legitimacy of the reform process. The organization stressed that visible, inclusive, and widely shared benefits of reform enhance social welfare and the political credibility of the reform agenda. However, the CPPE cautioned that the effectiveness of the SIPs hinges on their implementation, urging that program designs must consider Nigeria's institutional realities, minimize leakages, and ensure efficient and transparent delivery of support to intended beneficiaries.
