Craiova Mayor Threatens Lawsuit Over Denigration Campaign

Craiova Mayor Lia Olguța Vasilescu announced on Sunday, July 12, that she will file a lawsuit against an individual she accuses of orchestrating a smear campaign. The mayor alleges this person controls a network of websites and social media accounts, including Facebook and TikTok, which have been spreading "furious" and false accusations against her and her family for weeks.

In a Facebook post, Vasilescu stated that the campaign lacks any evidence and is filled with "outrageous lies." She specifically mentioned accusations involving banks she claims to have no connection with, purported money transfers, and cryptocurrency transactions. The mayor also expressed surprise at claims of her sending money to a "Telegram magnate" through tax havens, stating she didn't even know such a person existed until the accuser mentioned it.

Furthermore, Vasilescu addressed claims about a city hall employee allegedly involved in "dirty business" in urban planning. She asserted that the employee never worked in that department, let alone held a leadership position in procurement. The mayor questioned the reality of these claims, sarcastically asking if truth could spoil such "schoolyard sci-fi compositions." She concluded by questioning the identity and sanity of the accuser, asking, "Does anyone know who Bilal is or what he smokes?"
