Crews complete launch shaft for planned Toronto subway extension

The excavation of the tunnel launch shaft for Toronto's Yonge North Subway Extension is complete, representing a major milestone for the eight-kilometer project. The Ontario government announced the completion, signaling the next phase of extending subway service north from Finch Station.

The extension will introduce five new stations, terminating at High Tech Station and connecting with the Richmond Hill GO line. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted the project's significance, stating it will bring subway service to Markham and Richmond Hill for the first time. He emphasized its role in alleviating traffic congestion and providing access to housing and employment opportunities for thousands of residents.

With the launch shaft finished, tunnel boring machines are set to begin work on the line later this year.
