Croatia legend Modrić to continue international career after World Cup

Luka Modrić will continue playing for Croatia after the World Cup, keeping the country’s veteran captain available for a demanding Nations League schedule against Czechia, Spain and England.

The Croatian Football Federation confirmed the decision on Saturday through its official X account. It said Modrić had told head coach Slaven Bilić and Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustić that he was available for the upcoming matches.

“Of course, this Luka's decision makes me extremely happy, we are all aware what he brings to Croatia, both on and off the pitch,” Bilić said. “I am looking forward to working with him again, after 14 years, and we both share a strong ambition to keep Croatia a top, successful team, shoulder to shoulder with the best teams in the world.”

Modrić, who plays for AC Milan, has made two appearances in the new Serie A season without registering a goal or assist. At this year’s World Cup, he captained Croatia in its round-of-32 exit against Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Modrić created five chances and supplied one assist in four matches.

The 40-year-old has made 202 appearances for Croatia. The 2026-27 Nations League begins on Sept. 24. Croatia finished runner-up to Spain in the 2022-23 edition, after also reaching the 2018 World Cup final.
