Croatia prepares for Operation Storm anniversary, announces veteran benefit changes

Croatia is gearing up to mark the 31st anniversary of Operation Storm, a pivotal military offensive during the Croatian War of Independence. Minister of Croatian Veterans Tomo Medved confirmed that preparations are complete for the central celebration in Knin, emphasizing the significance of the operation in bringing freedom to the Croatian people.

Medved highlighted the commemoration of the 31st anniversary of the liberation of Hrvatska Dubica, the first municipal center liberated during Operation Storm. A monument honoring 245 Croatian defenders who perished during the operation will be unveiled. The program in Knin will commence with a mass, followed by a tribute to the fallen soldiers. A key event will be the raising of the Croatian flag at Knin Fortress, accompanied by a display of the Croatian Army and Police capabilities, including a flyover by the "Krila Oluje" aerobatic team and Rafale fighter jets.

In a significant announcement regarding veterans' rights, Minister Medved revealed upcoming amendments to the Law on Croatian Veterans. These changes aim to rectify a long-standing injustice by abolishing the pension reductions that were implemented in 2002. "We will correct an injustice," Medved stated, indicating that the proposed legislation will be submitted to Parliament in the autumn.

Medved also addressed the recent desecration of a monument to children killed during the Homeland War in Slavonski Brod. He expressed confidence that the perpetrators would be identified soon and urged citizens to remember the innocent victims of the aggression. The ministry committed to swiftly repairing the damage to the memorial.
