Croatia's U20 handball team suffers heavy defeat, misses World Championship

Croatia's U20 handball team experienced a devastating performance at the European Championship, culminating in a 31:36 loss to Israel. This defeat secured them 16th place, a result that also means they will not participate in next year's World Championship. The team had three opportunities to secure a spot in the World Championship but failed to win any of their final three matches, following their elimination from the main round. Losses to Austria, Romania, and finally Israel sealed their fate.

It is difficult to explain what happened in the match against Israel. It was as if the Croatian national team did not exist on the court.

The match against Israel was particularly disappointing, with the Croatian team appearing largely absent from the court. The situation worsened when Berislav Antonio Tokić received a direct red card for a rough foul. This loss marks one of the most difficult defeats for this generation of players.

Analysis of the team's performance points to goalkeeping as a critical weakness. In the last three games, Croatian goalkeepers made a combined total of just 15 saves. Against Austria, Sunajko made six saves and Klarić one. Romania saw Klarić make four saves and Vrcan three. In the decisive match against Israel, Klarić managed four saves and Sunajko two.

Despite the disappointing outcome, the team includes several players who are already making significant contributions to Premier League senior teams. Players like Matko Moslavac, Loris Hromin, Luka Llasan, Grubišić, Udovičić, Petar Šprem, Tomić, and Berislav Antonio Tokić are part of this generation. Their current performance at the European Championship, however, overshadows their potential, making the final result even more disheartening.
