Croatian defender Pongračić: We made technical errors, need to improve after Panama win

Croatian defender Marin Pongračić spoke about the team's crucial 1-0 victory over Panama, crediting the passionate support from Croatian fans worldwide. "We have excellent fans everywhere, many Croats in other countries. We knew that and we were very happy and grateful for that. The crowd is our 12th player," Pongračić stated.

Reflecting on the match, Pongračić acknowledged that while the defense was pleased to keep a clean sheet, the team has potential to improve. "There is potential to play better in some situations, to kill the game earlier and not have to fight until the last minute," he said. He also emphasized the mental fortitude required in elite football, noting that staying calm under pressure is paramount.

Regarding the game itself, Pongračić admitted to technical errors, particularly in the first half. "From the back line, we made quite a few technical mistakes. In the first half, it was very difficult for us to defend their low block and create dangerous situations. We only shot once at goal in the first half, and that's something we need to work on," he explained. He also stressed the importance of better defensive positioning, referencing how many favored teams had dropped points.

Pongračić also spoke about the immense significance of captain Luka Modrić to the team. "We all know what he means to us. He is our captain, he is our leader, and he is the greatest legend in the history of Croatian football," Pongračić said, praising Modrić's skills and his role as an example to all players.

Jako mi je teško to govoriti i analizirati u adrenalinu poslije utakmice. Koliko sam ja vidio iz zadnje linije, dosta smo griješili tehnički. U prvom poluvremenu bilo nam je jako teško braniti taj niski blok i dolaziti do opasnih situacija. Opalili smo samo jednom po golu u prvom dijelu i to je nešto na čemu moramo poraditi. Moramo i stajati bolje na terenu u defenzivi jer smo vidjeli koliko je favorita ispustilo bodove.
