Croatian Filmmaker Captures Artillery Positions Hidden in the Swiss Alps

The Swiss Alps conceal more than mountain landscapes and quiet alpine scenery. They also contain a striking chapter of modern military history, captured by Croatian filmmaker Alen Banković for his YouTube channel, Terra Croatia.

Banković specializes in forgotten historical and underground sites. With a drone, he located massive artillery positions built directly into vertical rock walls. His footage shows the difficult journey to the hidden site, the demanding terrain and the armored doors leading deep into the mountain.

The positions were built as part of Switzerland’s National Redoubt, an underground fortress system developed over decades. The strategy prepared the country to turn its mountainous terrain into a defensive stronghold in the event of an attack.

“ The camouflage of these positions was carried out with such precision that an ordinary passerby on the ground simply could not notice them, because the weapon openings and observation posts blend completely into the natural rock in color and texture,” Banković said. He described the footage as a rare look at Swiss military engineering and at how the landscape itself became a strategic defensive shield.
