Croatian man attempts to strangle Serbian hacker in police detention; both end up in Remetinec

A bizarre incident unfolded in a Zagreb police detention unit where a 22-year-old Croatian national allegedly attempted to strangle a 33-year-old Serbian national. The Serbian man was already in custody facing serious charges related to cybercrime, including unauthorized access to computer systems and data of Croatian public authorities and legal entities. He allegedly operated anonymously during 2026, using methods to mask his identity and location.

Following an investigation, police searched the Serbian man's vehicle and electronic devices, seizing items linked to the alleged cybercrimes. He was handed over to a detention supervisor on July 29. It is unclear if the two men knew each other prior to their shared cell.

Early on July 30, the Croatian suspect allegedly attacked the Serbian national, attempting to strangle him. Police officers intervened, preventing the attack. The reason for the Croatian man's initial detention is not specified, but he now faces charges for attempted murder.

Both men appeared before an investigative judge at the Zagreb County Court. The Croatian suspect was remanded in custody due to the risk of influencing witnesses and re-offending. The Serbian national also faces pre-trial detention for flight risk, potential witness tampering, and the risk of re-offending, in addition to his ongoing cybercrime investigation.
