Croatian Midfielder Lovro Majer Joins AEK Athens on Four-Year Deal

Croatian attacking midfielder Lovro Majer has officially joined Greek champions AEK Athens, signing a four-year contract. The 28-year-old moves from German club Wolfsburg, where he spent the last two seasons, seeking a new sporting challenge and the opportunity to compete for a place in the Champions League.

Majer expressed his gratitude to the fans, teammates, and everyone at Wolfsburg, stating, "After three years, it's time for me to take on a new sporting challenge. At AEK, I have the opportunity to fight for a place in the Champions League." He added that he always felt at home in Wolfsburg and wished the club the best for the future. Wolfsburg's sporting director, Pirmin Schwegler, confirmed Majer's desire for a new challenge, noting that the move to AEK made sense for both parties.

The transfer fee was not disclosed by either club, but specialized website Transfermarkt estimates Majer's value at approximately 8 million euros. Majer's move to AEK presents him with a chance to regain the form that once made him one of Croatia's most sought-after midfielders. He aims to become a key player in AEK's attacking strategy once again.

Majer began his career at Lokomotiva Zagreb before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2018, where he won league titles and domestic cups. He then transferred to French club Rennes for 13 million euros in 2021, followed by a 25 million euro move to Wolfsburg two years later. Notably, former Croatian national team coach Zlatko Dalić did not select Majer for the recent World Cup.
