Cross River NDC pass no-confidence vote on chairman

The Cross River State Executive Council of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has passed a vote of no confidence in its State Chairman, Goddie Akpama. The council accuses Akpama of continuing to receive salaries from the Cross River State Government for months after he claimed to have resigned his appointment.

Executives described the alleged continued salary payments as a potential conflict of interest and part of a pattern of actions that have hindered the party's growth in the state. The communiqué, signed by several state executives, also accused Akpama of anti-party activities, financial irregularities, and abuse of office. Specific allegations include altering the State Executive Council list without consultation, imposing party structures, and failing to publish ward and local government structures.

Further accusations state that Akpama managed party funds without transparency, constituted screening committees without constitutional authority, and admitted individuals of questionable loyalty. The executives also noted his failure to convene a State Executive Council meeting since the state congress.

The future of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Cross River State must not be jeopardised by internal disputes, personal interests, or unconstitutional practices.

The aggrieved executives have urged the party's National Working Committee to investigate these claims, focusing on potential constitutional breaches, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office. They also requested the restoration of the original State Executive Council structure and intervention to foster party unity.

Responding to the allegations, Akpama dismissed them as a politically motivated smear campaign aimed at weakening the opposition in Cross River State. He asserted that he formally resigned from the state government on February 16, 2026, and possesses documentary evidence, including his resignation letter and receipts, to prove he refunded any salaries mistakenly paid after his resignation.
