The controversy erupted after some participants demanded Lapid's removal, citing his nationality and his critical stance on Israel.

A group of filmmakers argued that Israel allows critical filmmakers to operate in European cultural spaces to maintain an image of a "living democracy" without challenging the "Zionist project itself." This stance led to calls for a boycott, which organizers cited as a reason for considering Lapid's disinvitation.

Supporters of Lapid, including prominent figures like Justine Triet, Jacques Audiard, and Natalie Portman, condemned the boycott as "intellectual bankruptcy" and a "simplistic disqualification." They argued that Lapid's films and public statements should be considered on their artistic merit, not solely on his nationality. A second petition, signed by hundreds of professionals including Palestinian essayist Elias Sanbar, further denounced the "logic of assignment" and the "disqualifying mechanism that borders on the most desolate simplicity."
