Cruz Azul will go to TAS over Rodrigo Huescas case

Mexican football club Cruz Azul is set to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) after a FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled against them in a case involving former player Rodrigo Huescas. The ruling, made on September 25, 2025, favored Huescas in proceedings initiated by Cruz Azul over an alleged breach of contract.

The dispute originated in the summer of 2024 when Huescas, a youth academy product of Cruz Azul, transferred to FC Copenhagen in Denmark. Cruz Azul's management contended that irregularities surrounded the defender's move to the Danish club and subsequently took the matter to FIFA.

FC Copenhagen reportedly paid Huescas's release clause of $2 million. However, Cruz Azul sought $5 million in damages, alleging a breach of contract and irregularities in the negotiation process. FIFA's decision not only sided with Huescas but also mandated that Cruz Azul pay their former player $300,000, plus an annual interest of 5% from September 2, 2024, until the payment is made.

Failure to comply with FIFA's order could result in Cruz Azul being banned from registering new players for up to three transfer windows. The club's decision to pursue an appeal at TAS indicates their determination to overturn the ruling and secure the compensation they believe they are owed.

The hearing at TAS is scheduled for September 24, 2026. This legal battle highlights the complexities and potential financial ramifications of player transfers and contract disputes within international football.
