Crvena Zvezda in crisis: Coach resigns, new manager expected from Spain

Serbian champions Crvena Zvezda find themselves in an unexpected crisis following their elimination from the Champions League third qualifying round by Hapoel Be'er Sheva. The team suffered a comprehensive 3-0 aggregate defeat, failing to score a single goal across the two legs.

Compounding the club's woes, head coach Dejan Stanković resigned following the disappointing performance. This leaves the team without a manager ahead of crucial Europa League playoff matches against Viktoria Plzen.

Club president Zvezdan Terzić addressed the situation in an extraordinary press conference, promising that the identity of the new coach would be revealed by midnight on Friday. Renowned football insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that Spanish coach Albert Riera is the likely successor.

Riera, who previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt from February to June, was not retained by the German club due to unsatisfactory results. He has also had notable spells with Celje and Olimpija Ljubljana. Notably, Riera was considered by Zvonimir Boban for the Dinamo Zagreb coaching position last summer before Mario Kovačević was appointed. Riera's tenure at Celje was considered a successful half-season before his move to Germany.
