Cuba decorates military rescue brigade for work in Venezuela after earthquake

Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canel has officially recognized a military rescue brigade for its humanitarian mission in Venezuela following a devastating earthquake. The contingent of 18 rescuers was awarded the 'For Bravery in Service' medal for their critical work in search, rescue, and providing aid to the affected population.

The double earthquake, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela's north-central region on June 24, causing widespread damage. The Cuban brigade was deployed to assist in the aftermath, demonstrating the island nation's commitment to international solidarity. President Díaz-Canel highlighted the rescuers' dedication, noting their willingness to work under risky conditions.

The brigade returned to Cuba at the end of July. They were part of a larger multidisciplinary delegation that included surgeons, forensic experts, and structural engineers. Their efforts focused on the state of La Guaira, providing crucial support for relief operations and technical inspections after numerous buildings collapsed due to the seismic activity. Official reports indicate the earthquake resulted in at least 6,125 deaths, damaged 856 buildings, and caused 190 structures to collapse.
