Cuba Secures Nations League Spot Despite Performance Shortcomings

Cuba's men's volleyball team achieved its primary goal of remaining in the 2027 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) but fell short of advancing to the quarterfinals or securing a top-12 world ranking. The team's campaign was significantly impacted by strategic decisions early on, including resting five key players to manage their recovery and giving opportunities to several young debutants.

Maintaining a spot among the 18 participants in the 2027 Nations League (VNL) was the only objective met by the Cuban volleyball players, as they did not advance to the quarterfinals nor rank among the top 12 in the world.

This approach led to an initial disadvantage, with Cuba suffering four consecutive losses. The absence of stars like Robertlandy Simón, Javier Concepción, Miguel Ángel López, Marlon Yant, and José Masso in the opening week, compounded by the voluntary withdrawal of outside hitters Osniel Mergarejo, José Miguel Gutiérrez, and middle blocker Roamy Alonso, weakened the regular lineup.

The need to give five stars time for recovery during the initial week and to use young debutants in the event considerably diminished the result – despite offering their maximum effort in the annual major competition – which is why Cuba started at a disadvantage of four losses.

Despite these challenges, some players showed flashes of brilliance. Alejandro Miguel González, a 23-year-old opposite hitter, stood out in the first week, scoring 14 points against Poland and Ukraine. The return of the star players in the second segment offered a stronger showing, particularly in a close 2-3 loss to two-time Olympic champions France, where López led with 19 points, supported by Yant (16), Masso (13), Simón (11), and Concepción (ten).

The absence at the debut of Robertlandy Simón, Javier Concepción, Miguel Ángel López, Marlon Yant, and José Masso, was joined by the absences, by their own decision, of outside hitters Osniel Mergarejo, José Miguel Gutiérrez, and middle blocker Roamy Alonso, who complemented the regular formation.

However, losses to the United States, Serbia, and Iran placed Cuba at the bottom of the VNL standings. The team found salvation in Osaka, Japan, securing vital victories against Belgium, Argentina, and Canada. A 3-1 loss to Italy in the final matches was offset by these wins, ultimately anchoring Cuba in 16th place in the tournament and 15th in the world rankings with 224.23 points, ensuring their spot in next year's VNL.

The opposite hitter Alejandro Miguel González, 23 years old and 2.07 meters tall, stood out in the opening week, fighting against Poland, scoring 14 points, with an equal number against Ukraine, examples that speak of his courage, but there was no supporting response.
