Cuban and Nicaraguan Writers Appointed to Cervantes Institute Board

The Cervantes Institute has appointed prominent Ibero-American literary figures, including Cuban novelist Leonardo Padura and Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli, to its Board of Trustees. They will serve alongside Colombian writer Piedad Bonnett and Hernando Torres-Fernández, director of Peru's Inca Garcilaso Cultural Center, representing the rich tapestry of Hispanic literature and culture.

This appointment signifies Spain's continued commitment to promoting the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures globally through the Cervantes Institute, a public body established in 1991. The board members, who serve six-year terms, are crucial in guiding the institution's mission.

Also joining the board are Spanish artists Ana Belén, a renowned singer and actress, and flamenco singer Soledad Morente, along with art historian Dolores Jiménez-Blanco. These appointments, proposed jointly by the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Culture, reflect a broad recognition of contributions to Spanish arts and academia.

The board comprises 22 members, with half being renewed every three years. Other representatives include Ana María Crespo, president of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, and Pedro Mercado, rector of the University of Granada, representing universities and royal academies. Javier Muñoz-Basols, president of the Association for Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language (ASELE), and Sofía Osborne, president of the Forum of Renowned Spanish Brands, will also serve, bringing diverse organizational perspectives to the institute's governance.
