Cup hero Ljubicic seizes new chance at Union Berlin

Marin Ljubicic seized a new chance with Union Berlin, scoring twice and assisting a goal in their 4-2 DFB-Pokal victory over Eintracht Braunschweig. The 24-year-old Croatian striker, who joined the club in February 2025 for 4.5 million euros, had seen his role diminish under the previous coach, Steffen Baumgart. His loan spell with Fortuna Düsseldorf ended in relegation last May, marking a career low.

However, the arrival of new coach Mauro Lustrinelli, who aims to implement a more dynamic and offensive playing style, has opened a door for Ljubicic. "I work hard and wait for my chance: I do that. And it paid off today," Ljubicic stated after the match. "Now I am back. And I want to stay. Nothing is decided yet. But it is clear that I want to stay. Because I truly believe that I can help the team – like today!"

Ljubicic acknowledged the significant shift in the team's approach. "The style of play, the system – it's completely different. It's not easy for anyone to adapt to this system. We have to run a lot and be good on the ball. But we showed today what we can do," he said. The new coach, Mauro Lustrinelli, has taken note of Ljubicic's performance, describing him as "an impeccable character."
