Curacao earns historic first World Cup point in goalless draw with Ecuador

The small Caribbean island nation of Curacao achieved a historic milestone in its World Cup journey, securing its first-ever point with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Ecuador. This result, achieved in Kansas City, also significantly boosted Germany's chances of advancing from Group E.

The match was a defensive masterclass from Curacao, primarily orchestrated by their veteran goalkeeper, 37-year-old Eloy Room. Playing for Miami in the USL Championship, the second tier of North American soccer, Room delivered a stellar performance, making an impressive 15 saves. His heroics kept the Ecuadorian attack at bay, bringing him close to the World Cup record of 16 saves set by American Tim Howard in 2014.

While Curacao and Ecuador battled for survival in the tournament, the draw was most advantageous for Germany. The German team secured their place in the round of 16 with a second consecutive victory, defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in an earlier match. This win put Germany at the top of Group E with six points.

Following the draw, Germany leads the group with six points. Ivory Coast is in second place with three points, while both Curacao and Ecuador have accumulated one point each. The final group game will see Curacao face Ivory Coast in a decisive match for qualification, while Ecuador will play Germany.
